Declutter and get yourself in order...

Do More With Less!

Whether you're spring cleaning, gearing up for tax season, or preparing for the arrival of a new baby, decluttering and organizing your space can reduce your stress and allow you to be more productive. Nothing is more frustrating than folding towels only to not have room in the linen closet, or to search for a pair of shoes in a pile of junk at the bottom of your closet. Worst than that, having to go buy something that you know you already have in the house but can't put your finger on it can be maddening!  If any of this sounds like you, it's time to de-clutter and get your stuff in order.

Getting rid of your excess doesn't always feel good when you start the process,  however, once it's done it can be a very liberating experience.   Many people become anxious at the thought of tossing out their items, especially if it still holds some sentimental value. Sometimes feelings of disgust for being so wasteful or disappointment for never have even popped the tags on a garment come into play. The approach to de-cluttering can be a daunting task, but the benefits are two-fold.
At RepurposedDecor a huge part of our business is centered around repurposing home furnishings or acquiring new and gently used items at our local thrift stores and consignment shops.  By de-cluttering your home, and donating to your local thrift stores, you are supporting communities in more ways than one. These stores typically support our communities by providing employment services through programs and referrals to help develop strong work experience for those re-entering the work force. Additionally, the proceeds from donations help to support disabled veterans, drug treatment programs and those faced with homelessness.  Items such as wheelchairs or medical beds are provided to those with disabilities through referral and verification programs with many of these retailers.
So why not clear out the clutter, get organized and give back while you're at it?  You're sure to feel good about the extra space and the gift of giving.

Ideas for Decorating Your Kitchen

Is your kitchen looking a little blasé? Perhaps you’re interested in changing your kitchen style, but don’t think you have the budget for it? Not to worry. We have plenty of easy ideas for decorating kitchens and kitchen countertops on a budget. From swapping hardware to adding a backsplash, you can spruce up your cooking space without a huge financial commitment. And while you’re redecorating, consider reorganizing your kitchen, too.

Family Room

Decide Your Room's Purpose

"When people have great rooms, they put their television in there, their kids play in there, they'll even eat in there." If you've got the space, try to narrow things down and let the room's real purpose decide the decor. Decide, for example, if your room will be a living room that you'll entertain in on just a few occasions or a family room you're going to use every day. A room's purpose should be one of the strongest cues for the decor.

 2020 Was Quite a Year

Are You In Need of a Virtual Classroom?

Virtual Is Our New Reality

During 2020 our lives were turned upside down. COVID-19 forced up all to stay home and change the way we went about our every day lives.  With the closing of schools and offices, which for many, has spilled over into the new year, families are still scrambling to carve out a space in their homes that is suitable for distance learning.

Creating a space for your child to focus and learn, while blocking out all of the distractions of home, can be quite a challenge. Inviting colors, seamless organizational solutions and functional furniture combined with optimal sound, lighting and access for charging devices are essential when designing your home learning space.

There is quite a bit of roll playing and imagination that goes into setting up a virtual classroom too! For instance, creating a space that is used exclusively for school helps children to separate home life from the class. Particularly with younger children, establishing routines such as placing belongings in a cubby, or setting up a library for checking books in and out of sounds silly, but these routines help with separation and better prepare them for when they do return to in-person school.

If there is a separate entrance, your little ones might feel like they've gone somewhere each day (to school) by entering the classroom through a different entry way. Although this option isn't always possible, homes that do have a basement or a mud room off from the garage can be an ideal area to create a learning space.

Keeping the classroom closed off when virtual learning is not in session is very important as well. Don't allow the room to become the play room, or else that teddy bear or soccer ball will surely become a distraction and make it's way into class! Some ideas for creating separation in a room, may be as simple as putting in a book case, a partition, or installing tension rods with curtains to close off the area after hours.

Aside from functionality, the size of classroom furniture really does matter.  If you have a five year old, Dad's old office chair or Mom's bulky desk in the den might be uncomfortable for your child to sit at for hours on end. On the other hand, if you have a teen, a child sized desk or chair won't provide the space or storage they'll need for a heavier work load. This is probably where you don't want to cut corners, if your budget permits.

Motivational quotes, wall art, fun characters and designated activity stations, along with supplies bins and an assortment of age appropriate learning materials are sure to keep your child engaged.

However you go about setting up their learning space, be sure to make it feel warm and inviting since being online can be a stressful time for your little ones. Before long, we'll all get back to school and work, but until then, give them a friendly and secure environment to thrive in.

WITH YOU ALL THE WAY

Home Gym

Depending on your fitness goals and budget, the perfect home gym for your needs is definitely out there.

New Year New You!

Physical and mental health are of the utmost importance, yet we get swallowed up in the daily hustle and bustle leaving little time to focus on our overall well being.  Why not create a space in your home for a small gym or zen den?

When it comes to home gyms, people typically think of bulky weights and awkward cardio equipment that take up half of the room ultimately ending up being an oversized clothes hanger before you know it.  We recommend streamlined equipment that allows you to move more freely in your space, combined with a simple storage solution for items such as towels, mats or free weights. Don't forget some wall art or framed quotes of inspiration. Believe it or not, they really do help with motivating and self accountability.

If you're working on a modest budget, shop around for some gently used equipment like a weight bench, or a set of dumbbells. Used sporting goods stores are a gem when starting your  home gym! Often times you'll come across practically new equipment, or higher end used or refurbished items from gym closeouts.  Also, discount retailers such as Ross, Marshalls and TJ Maxx offer a wide range of affordable gear like yoga mats, resistant bands, balls and light weights, with most just under $20.00.

Now, if your budget affords some higher end pieces,  you may want to consider the latest technology in working out. Interactive cardio equipment, such as the Peloton bike or The MIRROR combine virtual cardio sessions that are both sleek and aesthetically pleasing, which   can certainly justify  cancelling your gym membership.

Be sure to consider functionality while being conscience of the amount of space it takes up.   Ideally, equipment that folds down, or can be easily stored works best to keep your equipment from becoming that oversized clothes hanger we talked about earlier!  The key is to take your time and slowly add in items that suit where you are in your work out routine. Basically, there's no point in filling up a room with equipment that you're not likely to use. Whatever you choose, keep it simple, inviting and motivating so that you can reach your target goal.

ZEN DEN

Relax - Release - Renew

Ground yourself and find your center by creating a personal space to relax and renew.  Everyone has their way of winding down, but often times you'll still find yourself plugged in to all of life's little stressers.  Sure, reading a book in your bed may be your way of relaxing, but often times you'll still find yourself engaged and distracted by the tv or the phone.

Try carving out a personal space, away from high traffic noisy areas in your home and fill that space with all of the things that bring you peace.  Be sure to let in the light, or to add soft lighting to boost your energy and mood. Typically a meditation or relaxation room would include key elements such as plants, simple yet functional furniture like a bench, table or corner shelf.  Here you can display your crystals, candles and stones, as well as store mats, pillows and throws.  Natural sound effects such as a fountain, spa or meditation music and a diffuser with soothing scents such as lavendar oil,  best-known for its calming effects on the body and mind and ability to lessen anxiety.

Ideally, having a space that doesn't require having to clean up, and is ready for use when you return is what you're going for. Afterall, having to clean up is work and work equals stress.  The idea is to create a calm and peaceful space that allows you to retreat and recharge.
